QE Automation Hackathon Plan

A focused execution plan to convert the completed koala-pulsecheck framework into broad Modernization UI coverage across Light Mode, Dark Mode, desktop, tablet, mobile, roles, sandboxes, and staged regression.

What We’re Solving

The Modernization UI needs reliable automation coverage that can validate critical Surgimate workflows across themes, roles, viewports, and sandboxes. This initiative creates a scalable regression base rather than a one-off test migration.

137 existing automated test cases reviewed
110 applicable tests targeted for migration
~62 Modern UI Light + Dark tests planned
~50 manual staged regression cases automated

Four Core Automation Pillars

Every automation workstream maps to a clear QE and Engineering outcome.

Migrate existing Playwright coverage
Expand Modernization UI coverage
Automate staged regression
Enable scalable CI validation

koala-pulsecheck Automation Architecture

The completed framework provides the foundation for safe, reusable, role-based Surgimate E2E automation.

01

Test

Thin specs using @smoke, @regression, @e2e, theme, viewport, and role tags.

02

Role

Admin, Coordinator, Surgeon, and Staff sessions through reusable authenticated fixtures.

03

Sandbox

ModMedSandbox first, then Athena, Veradigm, ROI, and eCW where coverage is approved.

04

Pages & Components

Page Object Model plus shared components for tables, filters, dialogs, nav, toast, and forms.

05

Test Data

Maintained SQLite and JSON data, no global seed/reset, and explicit cleanup ownership.

06

Playwright

Desktop, tablet, mobile, Chromium, WebKit, Firefox, retries, traces, screenshots, and videos.

07

Reports

HTML, Allure, summary logs, Slack, and ELK-ready reporting for fast failure triage.

08

GitHub Actions

PR validation, daily smoke, nightly regression, pre-prod, and release validation pipelines.

Hackathon Scope Summary

Workstream 1

Existing Test Migration

Migrate applicable test cases from koala-playwright to koala-pulsecheck using fixtures, POM, role auth, data repositories, reporting, and tags.

Target: 110 migratable tests
Workstream 2

Modernization UI Coverage

Automate navigation, search, filters, profile, account, notifications, admin, patient, calendar, surgery detail, overview, and agenda workflows in Light and Dark.

Target: ~62 theme-aware tests
Workstream 3

Regression Automation

Automate high-frequency staged regression cases that are repetitive, stable, business-critical, and currently consume manual QE cycles.

Target: ~50 staged regression cases

Sprint Roadmap

Three focused sprint windows beginning with SM 26-20 and targeting major scope completion before Beta.

Sprint SM 26-20 · Sep 29 – Oct 10

Foundation Execution + P0 Migration

  • Start from completed koala-pulsecheck framework baseline
  • Migrate P0 Surgery CRUD, Scheduling, Calendar, and Agenda tests
  • Implement Modern UI navigation, search, and theme setup
  • Automate first P0 regression cases

Sprint SM 26-21 · Oct 13 – Oct 24

Core Migration + Modern UI Expansion

  • Complete P1 migration: Admin, Insurance, Templates, Overview
  • Expand Light and Dark coverage for filters, profile, account, admin, notifications
  • Automate patient, overview, notes, orders, care team, and checklist regression
  • Run stability checks on migrated scenarios

Sprint SM 26-22 · Oct 27 – Nov 7

Regression Completion + Beta Readiness

  • Complete P2 migration and remaining regression coverage
  • Run desktop, tablet, and mobile validation sweeps
  • Finalize GitHub Actions workflows and reporting
  • Stabilize flaky tests and publish Beta readiness summary

Team Ownership

The hackathon uses a practical working model: four focused hours every Friday, plus weekend sessions where required and where release responsibilities allow.

Key Risks & Controls

Environment & Data Risks

  • Staging instability and client data drift
  • Shared sandbox and account conflicts
  • Test data dependency and cleanup ownership

Execution Risks

  • Release testing conflicts with automation time
  • Modernization UI feature instability
  • CI execution time growth as coverage expands

Mitigation Strategy

  • Default to one-worker execution until isolated accounts and records exist
  • Use tag-based execution for targeted runs: smoke, regression, theme, role, viewport
  • Pause automation sessions during critical release testing windows
  • Start with stable P0 workflows and expand to P1/P2 coverage after repeatable passes

Deliverables & Strategic Impact

By Nov 1 Beta

  • Existing applicable automation migrated to koala-pulsecheck
  • Modernization UI automation across Light and Dark themes
  • Desktop, tablet, and mobile responsive coverage
  • Role-based and sandbox-based execution strategy
  • Approximately 50 staged regression test cases automated
  • GitHub Actions integration and automated reporting

Strategic Impact

  • Reduces manual QE regression effort for every release cycle
  • Improves confidence in Modernization UI Beta readiness
  • Creates a reusable foundation for future Surgimate regression testing
  • Supports faster, more reliable release validation through CI
